Insurgent Attacks Kill 13 in Iraq

A wave of insurgent attacks across Iraq Monday killed at least 13 people, mostly Iraqi policemen.

In Baghdad, several bomb explosions killed six Iraqis, including three policemen. A U.S. soldier also died when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle in the capital. North of Baghdad, in Diyala province, gunmen killed five policemen at a checkpoint near Baquba. Six of the attackers were killed.

Separately, the province's governor survived a bomb attack that killed his bodyguard. In Fallujah, U.S. Marines killed an insurgent as he tried to detonate his explosives-filled vest near a checkpoint. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko visited his country's troops in Iraq Monday. Ukrainian troops are to pull out of Iraq this week, handing over their equipment to Iraqi forces.
