Death Toll from India, Bangladesh Cold Spell Nears 170

The death toll from northern India's cold spell has risen to at least 146 as millions of people woke up to the coldest winter morning in 70 years.

The New Delhi city government ordered all primary schools to close for three days beginning Monday after the temperature fell to zero-point-two degrees Celsius. Weather officials reported below-freezing temperatures in the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Rajastan and Haryana. They blame colder than usual weather on heavy snow in the Himalayas and northwesterly winds.
