The World Bank has approved 500 million dollars in aid to help countries fight bird flu.
A bank official tells the Reuters news agency that Kyrgyzstan will be the first country to receive funds next month. The official said he expects it to get about five million dollars. A senior World Health Organization official said Thursday the bird flu situation is getting worse and the threat of a worldwide pandemic grows every day.
The WHO says samples of the deadly H5N1 strain taken from two bird flu victims in Turkey show a slight genetic change in the virus -- a sign it may be trying to mutate into a human flu virus that could kill millions.
Bird flu has killed three people in Turkey and 79 people in southeast Asia and China since 2003.
