Military officials in India say they have carried out a successful test-firing of the Akash surface-to-air missile. The test was conducted Saturday from a test range in east India's Orissa region.
Two missiles fired from rocket launchers tracked, intercepted and destroyed two airborne targets at a range of about 20 kilometers. The Akash missile, designed and built in India, is one of five under development by India's state-run Defense Research and Development Organization. Defense officials said the Akash missile is part of an electronic tracking and control system that can detect and attack multiple targets at the same time.
