Thousands of Airport Workers Strike in India

Thousands of airport workers are on strike in India to protest an airport privatization plan involving foreign companies. Flights remained unaffected except in Kolkata.

Authorities shut down Kolkata airport after firefighters and those in charge of lighting on the runway joined the protest.

A demonstration turned violent in Mumbai, where police used batons against striking workers who tried to force their way into the airport building.

Protests are also being held outside airports in New Delhi and Bangalore.

The strikers want India's Cabinet rescind a plan that allows two foreign companies to revamp the New Delhi and Mumbai airports.

Demonstrators say they are not against modernizing the two airports, but oppose privatizing them because they fear it can lead to job losses.

Gautam Gupta has more on the story.
