IAEA Meeting on Iran Postponed Until Saturday

The United Nations nuclear watchdog agency has postponed until Saturday a meeting to decide whether to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear program.

European and U.S. delegates to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna are working behind the scenes to broaden support for a draft resolution that would set the stage for possible sanctions against Iran.

A vote initially was scheduled for Friday.

Some of the countries on the 35-member governing board reported to be Cuba, Venezuela and Syria oppose the draft resolution. However, analysts predict that a majority of the agency's governing board will approve the resolution.

In New York, Chinese diplomats at the United Nations said their country does not support sanctions against Iran, and there is still time for a diplomatic solution.

U.S. and European officials accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
