High Court Issues Show Cause on Government About Massive Arrests in Bangladesh

It is reported that nearly three thousand people were arrested in Bangladesh only in three days to stop them from joining the grand rally of the 14 party opposition alliance. Some of the arrestees were tied with ropes and dragged away. They were arrested under section 54 of the code of criminal procedure.

The Division Bench of the High Court , in response to a writ petition by an official of a human rights organization , has issued a show cause to the government asking them why these arrests will not be declared illegal. The government has been asked to respond within the next two weeks. The court has also ordered to compensate the arrestees.

During the hearing of the writ petition Dr Kamal Hossain , an eminent jurist said that the law is being misused to curb people’s democratic right to attend political meetings and programs.
