Hasina Vows to Protect Democracy: Pays Tributes to the Martyrs in the War of Liberation


Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition said that Bangladesh by amending its constitution since the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the country, has gradually slipped away from the ideals of the War of Liberation . She was speaking at a local hotel in Washington on the Occasion of the Independence Day of Bangladesh.

The Awami League Chief paid glowing tributes to the freedom fighters and all those who sacrificed their lives and honor for the liberation of Bangladesh. The opposition leader, in an hour long speech tallied the achievements of her government (1996-2001) with the present government. She spoke about the developments in the field of food autarky and the progress her government accomplished during her regime in energy , fertilizer and development sectors.

She alleged that the present government has failed to achieve anything substantial complaining about corruptions and militancy. She accused the government for manipulating the militancy issue and demanded an international probe into the network of fanatic militancy in Bangladesh . Hasina warned the government that until the electoral reform proposal of the fourteen party opposition alliance is accepted , her alliance would not participate in the forthcoming election.
