Islamabad Asks Washington for Nuclear Package

Pakistan has asked Washington to adopt a "package approach" towards providing civilian nuclear technology to India and Pakistan.

The Pakistani request was made Tuesday when Foreign Minister Khursheed Kasuri met visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher.

Pakistan is concerned over the recenty concluded nuclear deal between the United States and India. President Bush signed the deal with India, but refused to cut a similar deal with Pakistan.

According to a Pakistani foreign office statement, Kasuri underlined the need for a package approach that would prevent an arms race, promote restraint and address the legitimate civil nuclear energy needs of Pakistan. The two men also discussed Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan and India. Both have urged Pakistan to do more to prevent cross-border terrorism. Boucher called on President Pervez Musharraf, but no details were released.
