Six Killed in Bangladesh Protests Over Power Shortages

Bangladeshi authorities say six people, including a child, were killed in clashes with police in a northern town where thousands of farmers have been protesting inadequate power supplies.

More than 100 others have been injured in late Wednesday's violence.

The head of the opposition Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, condemned the police action, saying the government is attempting to suppress the people by force rather than solving the problems.

The farmers are demanding a cheaper and more reliable supply of electricity for crop irrigation. Power is cut off for several hours each day.

Matiur Rahman Choudhury has more on the story.
