Bangladesh & India Seeks Ways of Reducing the Trade Deficit


After a three day ministerial level meeting of the South Asian Free Trade Association (SAFTA) which ended on Thursday, the Commerce ministers of Bangladesh and India met in Dhaka.

Officials say Altaf Hussain Chowdhury the commerce minister of Bangladesh and Joy Ram Romesh, Indian state minister for commerce agreed to find ways and means to reduce the wide trade deficit between India and Bangladesh. Previously the Indian minister had said that the best way of reducing the gap is to encourage indian investment in Bangladesh.

Later in a joint press conference the Bangladeshi commerce minister said that in about a week or ten days’ time both the countries will try an enlist the problems of their respective countries and will exchange the list in order to resolve the problems. Besides , the ministers will hold another meeting in June to resolve issues relating to the land port.
