Boucher is Optimistic About the Future of Democracy in Bangladesh


Richard Boucher , the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia , who returned from his trip to some the countries of the region met the journalist in a press round table on Thursday at the Department of State. He mentioned that he expects to visit a few more countries in the region , including Bangladesh pretty soon.

In answering a question on the situation of Bangladesh in context of the ongoing movement there , Mr Boucher said that US does not have any specific advise about it but he added , “ the most important to us is that we see the parties cooperate, parties try to reach an agreement of fair sets of rules. He emphasized that the parties must participate in the process. He said that although domestically there are differences of opinion about the Caretaker government in Bangladesh , the system itself has been theoretically at least appreciated in many countries. Mr Boucher also spoke about his visit to India and Pakistan .

Mr Boucher said that with India they have explored several areas of cooperation which were not considered ever before. The Assistant Secretary of State mentioned that Pakistan has got a broader agenda of cooperation in economic and social and educational aspects. He also mentioned about the need for a proper democratization in Nepal where he thinks that the King must gradually assume a more symbolic role.
