Bangladeshi Power Minister Replaced Amid Protests Over Shortages

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has removed the country's power minister amid growing nationwide protests over inadequate power supplies.

A government statement says Mrs. Zia reassigned Iqbal Hasan Mahmud to the agriculture ministry on Sunday.

The statement says Mahmud was replaced by the state minister for Finance and Planning, Anwar Kabir Talukdar.

Since January, at least 16 people have been killed during protests over power shortages in Bangladesh.

The protesters want a cheaper and more reliable supply of electricity for crop irrigation. Power is cut off several hours each day.

Zahurul Alam has more on the story.
