Three detainees at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay have died in apparent suicides. U.S. Navy Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of the Guantanamo base, said Saturday the three, two Saudis and a Yemeni, hanged themselves using nooses fashioned from their clothing.
Medical personnel were unable to revive the men. Admiral Harris said he believed the suicides were planned and coordinated by the detainees who lived in the same cell block.
Each man had been incarcerated at Guantanamo for about four years. Each had participated in hunger strikes, and each had been force-fed. The White House said President Bush expressed serious concern about the suicides.
