More Than 100 Injured in Bangladeshi Opposition Protest Rallies

More than 100 people have been hurt in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh during clashes between police and opposition activists trying to march to the election commissioner's office.

At least 50 people were injured in Dhaka on Tuesday as police used batons, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse stone-throwing activists trying to push through barbed-wire barricades. More than 50 people were hurt in Bagerhat district in the south and Mymensingh district in the north during the opposition's countrywide call to march to the offices of the country's election commissioner.

A 14-party opposition alliance led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is demanding that the chief election commissioner be replaced before next year's general election. The opposition also is pressing for election reforms, saying they are a must to ensure a free and fair poll.

Zahurul Alam has more on the story.
