Imam of the Tipu Sultan mosque Nurur Rehman Barkati, who allegedly announced a reward of Rs. 50,000 to anyone who would smear black paint on the face of the controversial Bangladeshi writer, Taslima Nasreen denied that he had issued any fatwa against her.
Prasun Mukherjee, Commissioner of Police spoke to the cleric. He said he was misquoted, "A fatwa cannot be issued verbally. It has to be put down in a written form. I have not issued such a decree."
