President Bush Says Iran Must Stop Terror Support in Middle East

President Bush says Iran must stop its support of terror in the Middle East. Speaking at the State Department Monday after meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Mr. Bush said Iran and Syria supported Hezbollah fighters with weapons and training in their month-long fight with Israel.

He said he could only imagine how dangerous the conflict would have been if Iran had the nuclear weapons that he says it seeks. The president said Hezbollah was handed a defeat by Israel because now there will be a new power in southern Lebanon.

Mr. Bush was referring to a combined Lebanese/United Nations peacekeeping force due to patrol the border area in Lebanon's south which, he said, would prevent Hezbollah from acting as a state within a state. He blamed the conflict and the suffering it caused on Hezbollah, whose capture of two Israeli soldiers brought Israeli reprisal. Mr. Bush said he hopes the ceasefire holds and that growth in freedom and democracy will leave no room in the Middle East for terror.
