Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam , Professor of English in Dhaka University paid rich tributes to Poet Shamsur Rahman and his poetic works. Professor Islam said that the modern Bengali poetry of the 1930s had two distinct strains , one of political overtones and the other more aligned to nature. Poet Shamsur Rahman , in 1960s , combined these strains in a unique way.
In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service , Professor Islam praised Poet Shamsur Rahman’s commitment to his own time and place in his writings , particularly his superb works on the evolution of political events in Bangladesh as they unfolded gradually and his awareness of contemporary events along with an element of aesthetic universality as is often expected of a modern poet.
Syed Manzoorul Islam, who is a writer himself, analyzes some of the features in Rahman’s writings and says that he had the ability to be ironic and at times sarcastic too , in his poems not only on political and social events but also about his own self.
