More Than 70 Taleban Killed in Southern Afghanistan Battle


Afghan officials say NATO and Afghan forces have killed at least 71 Taleban insurgents during a battle in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan.

A provincial police chief Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi said four policemen and one Afghan soldier were also killed. He said the battle began when hundreds of Taleban stormed a town in Panjwayi district late Saturday.

A NATO spokesman Major Scott Lundy said NATO aircraft and heavy artillery provided critical support during the battle. The fighting lasted through the night.

Elswhere, Britain's Defense Ministry says a British soldier was killed and three others wounded during a clash with hostile forces in Helmand province on Sunday.

On Saturday, four US soldiers were killed during combat operations in two other provinces, Kunar in the east and Uruzgan in central Afghanistan. An Afghan police officer was killed in a separate incident in southern Zabul province.
