Indo-Bangla Joint Rivers Commission to Meet in Dhaka

Indo-Bangla Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) will meet in Dhaka on Wednesday today to resolve longstanding disputes concerning the common rivers of the two countries.

Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed and his Indian counterpart Prof Saifuddin Soz will lead their respective sides at the talks. The meeting is being held following comprehensive groundwork, including joint visits to the sites of dispute between the two neighboring countries. The official talks between the two nations will be followed by a joint press conference in the evening.

Prof Soz arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday. His trip follows the visit of Bangladesh Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed to northeast India last week. Various problems including 13 cross-border rivers, riverbank protection works, minor lift- irrigation schemes, drinking water-supply scheme and the dredging of the Ichamati River are likely to be discussed.
