Gunmen Open Fire at Baghdad Mosque, Killing 10

Gunmen in Iraq have fired on worshippers near a Sunni mosque in Baghdad, killing 10 people and wounding 11 others.

Officials say the attackers struck as worshippers gathered at the al-Meshaahda mosque for evening prayers Wednesday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Meanwhile, at least 13 people were killed by insurgent or sectarian attacks elsewhere in Iraq.

At a briefing in Baghdad, a U.S. military spokesman (Major General William Caldwell) said this week's suicide attacks have been at the highest level of any given week. He provided no figures, but said terrorists and other militant groups are trying to discredit the Iraqi government.

Separately, the U.S. military says eight people -- four terrorist suspects and four women -- were killed in a U.S.-led raid against suspected al-Qaida militants in the Iraqi town of Baquba.

The U.S. military also says one American soldier and a U.S. Marine were killed Monday by enemy action in Iraq's western Al Anbar province.
