US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard Boucher told a press conference at the American Club that a military takeover in Bangladesh would not help conduct a free and fair election in Bangladesh and urged the caretaker government and Election Commission (EC) to act neutrally to ensure each vote is counted and results are trusted.
Boucher who arrived in the capital on Saturday said that the situation in Bangladesh was difficult . He called on the political leadership to lower the level of tension and violence and hold peaceful demonstrations so that voters get educated about elections.
Boucher also met with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Saturday. He will wind up his Bangladesh trip by visiting the Head of the Caretaker government President Iajuddin Ahmed.
