Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on a visit to West Bengal, inaugurated a project in Burnpur to modernize and expand the country's oldest steel plant, Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO).
He then returned to Kolkata to inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Indian Statistical Institute at Baranagore.
