Bangladeshi security forces have detained at least eight former ministers and other senior politicians.
Local news reports and witnesses say the officials were seized from their homes in the capital, Dhaka, early Sunday morning.
Officials have not given a reason for the action, taken by security forces under powers handed to them in a state of emergency.
Among those detained were the former communications minister, Nazmul Huda of the outgoing Bangladesh National Party and the former interior minister, Mohammad Nasim of the main opposition party, the Awami League.
