The general index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange on Thursday hit a new high of 2003.58 points as institutional, retail and foreign investors went on a buying spree.
The previous record high of the index was 1999.71 points reached on January 1, 2005.
The index, introduced on November 27, 2001, excludes the low-profile Z category stocks from its calculation.
In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service, a share market expert and Professor of Economics, Dhaka University Dr Abu Ahmed says that the growth rate which they expected of 7% or more has not been achieved this time and if the growth rate is low it can have negative impacts on share market.
He however said that as the ‘anti-economic phenomenon ’ such as general strikes and blockades have stopped , there is of course a positive impact of all these . He added that on the whole people now believe that that the stock market can yield better profits.
