Palestinian Kidnappers Threaten to Kill BBC Reporter

The Palestinians who claim to be holding kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston have renewed their threat to kill him if their demands are not met.

In an e-mail to reporters, the group calling itself the Army of Islam demanded that Jordan release a man, Abu Mohammed al-Maqdissi, known as the spiritual mentor of slain al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Al-Maqdissi was jailed in 2005.

The kidnappers have also demanded the release of Sajida al-Rishawi, an Iraqi woman who has been sentenced to death in Jordan for her role in the 2005 suicide bomb attacks in Amman that killed 60 people.

The kidnappers also want Britain to release an imprisoned al-Qaida-linked cleric, Abu Qatada.

Johnston was kidnapped in March in the Gaza Strip.

In a video released by the kidnappers Monday, the journalist is shown wearing an explosives belt and saying his captors plan to detonate it if there is a rescue attempt.

The BBC called the video distressing and urged Johnston's abductors to release him unharmed.
