Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman and former President Hossain Muhammad Ershad quitted as the party chairman and appointed Presidium Member Anisul Islam Mahmud to be the acting Chairman of the party until the council elects a new chief. Ershad has been widely seen as a former military dictator who ruled the country for nine years till he was ousted through a popular moment ran the country for about nine years, he also declared that he would not contest the apex post in the next council. Ershad made this announcement at a press conference at his house at Baridahara. He said the rest of the party structure however would remain unchanged. He added that he had decided to stand down as the chairman to pave the way for reforms in the party. Ershad has been the chairman of his party since 1986.
