Torrential rain flooded most of Kolkata and adjoining North and South 24-Parganas districts in West Bengal.
Banks and stockbroking offices functioned normally but educational institutions were closed and government offices were almost empty. About 160mm of rain fell in the early hours of Tuesday. Many roads were under knee to waist deep water.
Six people from a family, were killed when their hut collapsed in the rains near Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district.
Kolkata’s mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee said all 19 pumping stations were operating with 350 pumps deployed, but it would take some time for the water to recede, because of high tide in the river Hooghly.
