Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been arrested on charges of extortion and ordered jailed without bail pending trial.
Ms. Hasina, who served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001, was taken into custody on Monday in the capital of Dhaka after hundreds of police surrounded her home.
Police fired tear gas to break up protests by supporters of Ms. Hasina's Awami League party.
Bangladeshi officials say Ms. Hasina was detained in connection with a charge of extorting more than 400-thousand dollars from a businessman during her term in office.
Matiur Rahman Choudhury has the details.
