Bangladesh Directs NGOs to Spend 50 Percent of Funding on “Visible Developments”

The NGO Affairs Bureau in Bangladesh has issued a circular directing the NGOs to spend at least 50 percent of the foreign funding on visible development like building and upkeep of roads, schools and culverts and excavation or re-excavation of canals. According to the circular, it will ensure accountability.

Meanwhile, NGO officials are saying that accountability will not be ensured by the implementation of the new directive. They feel it will create a crisis for the NGOs if they have to spend 50 percent of their funding on infrastructure outside the stated goals of the NGOs.

Matiur Rahman Choudhury has more on the story.
