Andhra’s Police Firing & Nandigram Issue in West Bengal


The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned the killing of peaceful protesters in police firing in Mudigonda, near Khammam in Andhra Pradesh. In a statement in New Delhi on Saturday, the Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) said the police resorted to ‘brutal firing’ on people participating in a peaceful road blockade as part of the bandh to protest ‘police repression’ and the Government’s refusal to concede their genuine demands.

The CPI (M), CPI and 195 mass organizations have been conducting a peaceful stir for house sites and land for the poor since May. Instead of settling the issues, the Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh resorted to ‘brutal attacks’ against the people, it said.

However the ruling communist front in West Bengal have been in an awkward situation given the fact that killings in Nandigram is still being subject to severe criticism and the West Bengal government’s response has been much slower than the Andhra government’s
