Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided not to renew licences for hand-pulled rickshaws in the city. The decision follows a state government notification earlier this week.
Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya on Friday said that officials of the licence department had been asked not to renew licences for rickshaws. "It is not legal to ply rickshaws any more. Police have to crack down on those who violate the ban," he said. Some 5,697 hand-pulled rickshaws are registered with the KMC licence department.
