Bangladesh High Court Issues Ruling On Cancellation of August 15 as a National Day of Mourning

The High Court issued a rule on Monday asking the government why cancellation of August 15 as the National Day of Mourning and a public holiday should not be declared illegal.

An High Court bench passed the order after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed with the court challenging a cabinet division order issued during the immediate past BNP-led alliance government's regime. The order was the cancellation of August 15 as the National Day of Mourning and a public holiday.

The rule is returnable within a week. Supreme Court lawyer Mozammel Huq and two others filed the writ petition. The petitioners also sought court directives reinstating the date as the National Day of Mourning and a public holiday.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed on August 15, 1975.
