Additional District and Session Jugde-3 of Rajshahi this morning awarded RCC Mayor M. Mijanur Rahman Minu and 10 of his associates 13-year and one month rigorous imprisonment(RI) and taka 20,500 fine each, in default, to serve five months more imprisonment, in an extortion case.
Shamsul Alam, a managing committee member of Evergreen Model School and College, Bahrampur area of the city on April-21 this year filed a case against Minu and 10 of his party cadres with Rajpara thana for demanding taka four lakh toll.
When Shamsul Alam refused to pay the toll, the accused, being directed by the Mayor, looted properties including furniture of the college amounting taka 25 thousand and damaged documents of the college worth taka 13 thousand.
The first special judge's court in Dhaka yesterday sentenced detained Awami Swechhasebak League general secretary Pankaj Devnath to 13 years and his wife Monika Devnath to three years imprisonment in a corruption case filed by the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC). Pankaj Devnath, a former student leader, has also been fined Tk 10 lakh and in default to suffer one year more in jail while his wife Monika Devnath fined Tk two lakh and in default to suffer six months more in prison.
After examining 53 prosecution and four defence witnesses and records, Mr Firoz Alam, judge of the special court -1 Dhaka set up at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex, also ordered confiscation of their wealth worth about Tk 64,00480 which they amassed illegally.
