Pakistani officials say a soldier and four suspected Islamic militants are dead following a clash in the country's northwest, near the Afghan border.
Officials Sunday say the suspected militants attacked a military post west of Miranshah, in North Waziristan with rockets and small arms fire. Officials say troops at the post responded with artillery.
The tribal North Waziristan region is considered a stronghold for Taleban and al-Qaida militants. Violence in the region has spiked since last month, when militants pulled out of a peace deal with the government.
Elsewhere, Pakistani officials say a suicide bomber killed four policemen and wounded two others Sunday in a remote tourist town in the restive Northwest Frontier Province.
Officials say the bomber blew himself up when police stopped him at a checkpoint in the town of Swat.
