Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner advocates relaxing Emergency

The chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, has said the state of emergency should be relaxed in the areas where local body polls are expected from January onwards.

The CEC said that they would go for holding polls from next January to the areas where voters’ roll preparation would be completed by December. So there should be no ban on indoor politics and the state of emergency needs to be relaxed too to allow election campaigns by candidates.

Dr Huda was talking to the representative of electronic media.

The CEC, however, said that they were yet to discuss the issue with the interim government.

He informed the audience that voter registration had already completed in Rajshahi and Khulna city corporation areas and election activities in the areas would start in January next year.
