The countdown to West Bengal's annual extravaganza, the Durga Puja began on Wednesday with Mahalaya.
Early Wednesday morning, in Kolkata and across the state, Bengalis woke up early to tune into the traditional chanting of the Mahalaya on radio.
Thousands of others went to the banks of the Hooghly for torpon or special prayers for their ancestors.
Durga Puja officially begins next Wednesday on October 17. Meanwhile Mahalaya is a holiday for the state.
