General Moeen U Ahmed, the Chief of Bangladesh army has once again reiterated the pledge to return Bangladesh to Democracy. On Wednesday, the first day of his seven day visit to US, General Moeen explained the situation under which the present caretaker government has to assume power helped by Bangladesh army .
Elaborating the situation General Moeen said that following the turmoil in October , they had three possible options. One of which was to allow the then caretaker government to go ahead with January 22. If it was done, the country would have been engulfed in further chaos and violence. The second option was to promulgate martial law which would have put an impediment on democratic process. The third option, which they eventually chose, was to throw away the caretaker government , bring in new caretaker government with a clear mandate to hold free , fair and credible election.
General Moeen U Ahmed also discussed on socio-economic matters and talked about corruption in Bangladesh . He praised the role which the expatriate Bangladeshis are playing .
General Moeen was addressing at a Dinner Reception given in his honor at a hotel in New York. Amongst those who spoke on the occasion was Humayun Kabir, the Ambassador of Bangladesh in the United States.
