The police on Friday refused BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain permission to enter Sylhet city where he reportedly went to visit the shrine of Shahjalal, forcing him to return to Dhaka on ‘security ground’.
More than three platoons of police, led by assistant commissioner of the Sylhet metropolitan police, Nazmul Islam, stopped the vehicles carrying Khandaker Delwar and his entourage at Lalabazar on the outskirts of the city on Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Delwar, along with his two daughters, BNP office secretary Rizvi Ahmed and former party lawmaker Sohrab Hossain, was scheduled to offer Fateha at the tomb of the saint and say Juma prayers at the mosque there.
Delwar claimed to VOA that his intention was to visit Shahjalal’s shrine . But a police official told VOA that he was going to attend a political gathering which would have violated emergency rules. Besides , the police said that they were apprehending some kind of clash between the two factions of BNP.
