Six Killed During Tribal Rights Protest in India

Police in northeast India say six people were killed after clashes erupted between area residents and demonstrators at a tea workers protest.

At least 60 others were injured in the violence.

A group of nearly 10-thousand workers from tea plantations throughout the state of Assam gathered in the capital of Gauhati on Saturday to demand the government recognize them as a separate tribal group. That special designation would entitle them to secure government jobs and receive educational and financial perks.

Police and witnesses say the clashes erupted when the marchers pelted shops and vehicles with stones.
