US Navy Joins Relief Effort for Bangladesh Cyclone Survivors

Bangladesh officials say the United States Navy has joined in relief operations for survivors of the country's devastating cyclone.

Helicopters from the USS Kearsarge, joined by a C-130 transport plane, began airlifting food and water on Monday to thousands of survivors along Bangladesh's hard hit southern coast.

A U.S. military medical team has been deployed to provide medical care in several affected areas. A second U.S. naval ship is due to arrive soon.

Cyclone Sidr, which struck 11 days ago, killed more than 35-hundred people and displaced at least two million others.

The government of Bangladesh says it has received nearly 400 million dollars in financial aid from the international community, including 250 million from the World Bank.

Amir Khasru has more on the story.
