President Bush says the United States will be actively engaged in the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, following the relaunching of long-stalled peace talks between the sides.
Mr. Bush made the comment at the White House on Wednesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Mr. Bush said the United States will help the Israelis and Palestinians as they come up with the necessary decisions to lay out a Palestinian state that will live side by side in peace with Israel. He said it is important for the international community to support Mr. Abbas and Mr. Olmert during the negotiations.
Wednesday's talks at the White House are a follow up to Tuesday's Middle East conference in Annapolis, Maryland, where the Palestinians and Israelis agreed to immediately restart peace negotiations after a seven year freeze, with the hope for a two-state settlement by the end of 2008.
