Amnesty International Head Talks to VOA on Bangladesh Politics

Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan in an Exclusive interview with VOA says she was assured by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Dr Fakruddin and Army Chief General Moin that election would take place within this year, though there is some confusion among the people.

Irene khan says Amnesty International is inquiring into the cases of two detained former Prime Ministers Khaleda Zia and Shiekh Hasina and whether due process of law is being followed. Amnesty Secretary demands lifting of emergency as soon as possible and says emergency can not be a mode of governance for long. Irene Khan suggests that the government should start a dialogue with the political parties saying a credible election and future will also depend on political parties. Amnesty Secretary says that it is a golden chance for the government to initiate the process for a war crime tribunal and political contradictions should not be an impediment to this.
