The fire in Kolkata's largest wholesale market Burrabazar has largely been contained but is still raging. It has now been more than 36 hours since the fire started.
There was also a blast in the generator room of the fire-ravaged Nandaram market in Burrabazar earlier in the evening, spreading blaze all over the 13-storeyed building. Fifty fire tenders are being used to fight the blaze. T
he 6th floor of a building was engulfed in flames late on Saturday night. At least 2,500 shops in seven buildings have been destroyed in the blaze. Army was called out to assist operations to fight the fire, which set off again on late Saturday night.
Jawans entered eighth floor of fire-ravaged Nandaram building to control the blaze. Six Army men led by a Major from Panagar ammunition depot had also arrived with CO2 and foam to help firefighters extinguish the fire. The entire high-rise Nandaram Market building at Burrabazar could collapse with pockets of fire still raging in some floors.
