High Court rejects  Khaleda’s Writ on BNP Faction’s Legitimacy

The High Court on Thursday rejected the writ petition filed by the detained Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia which challenged the Election Commission’s invitation to the acting secretary general of the BNP splinter group, M Hafizuddin Ahmed, for electoral reforms talks scheduled for November 22, 2007.
The High Court bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Mamnoon Rahman delivered the verdict after a prolonged hearing in the petition for 10 working days.

Dismissing the writ petition, the High Court observed in the verdict that the petition involved the internal feud of the BNP over leadership and the court had no jurisdiction to make any decision in connection with such conflicts.

Hafizuddin welcomed the verdict and told reporters they would try to sit with the rival group leaders so that they could join the commission’s dialogue together.
The BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, however, told reporters the party was denied justice.
