Kenyan Leaders Announce New Power-Sharing Cabinet

Kenyan leaders have unveiled a new power-sharing Cabinet, ending a deadlock that threatened to reignite the nation's deadly post-election crisis.

President Mwai Kibaki announced the 40-member Cabinet at a news conference on Sunday alongside his election rival Raila Odinga.

As expected, the president appointed Mr. Odinga as prime minister. The two new slots for deputy prime minister were split between the president's Party of National Unity and Mr. Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement.

The parties split the ministries evenly, but Mr. Kibaki's allies took the key posts of defense, finance, foreign affairs, internal security, and justice.

Talks on the Cabinet had been stalled for weeks, raising fears that the power-sharing agreement Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga signed in February would unravel.

Both men claimed to have won Kenya's December presidential election. The dispute triggered riots and ethnic violence that killed more than a thousand people.
