The new U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh has urged the interim government to lift a state of emergency so the country can hold free, fair, and transparent elections by the end of the year.
James Moriarty, who presented his credentials to President Iajuddin Ahmed in Dhaka Monday, said, a credible election is not possible under emergency rule. The ambassador urged Bangladesh's army-backed government to lift the state of emergency. "An election will be extremely difficult under a state of emergency and it needs to be lifted," ambassador James F. Moriarty told reporters.
