Bumper Paddy Harvested in Bangladesh

Amidst the global food crisis and the price hike of food crops, Bangladesh has had a bumper growth of Boro paddy this year.

The farmers are very happy about the huge production of rice. The major boro rice crop is expected to yield nearly 17.5 million tonnes this year, against 15 million tones in 2007, leaving Bangladesh to seek costly imports for the rest of its estimated 30 million tones needed to secure its food supply.

However the farmers have taken a huge amount of loan and paid earnest money in order to reap the benefit. The experts say that it will depend how government plans to distribute food and build up buffer crop stock.

Beside , rice is still being imported to meet the shortcomings which Bangladesh faced recently.
