The Awami League on Saturday obtained police permission to stage a token hunger strike scheduled for Monday only in the party office on Bangabandhu Avenue and the party chief’s office at Dhanmondi.
Although the AL earlier decided to also observe the program at all the 22 thana units in the capital, the party presidium at a meeting on Saturday night decided to postpone it at thana level following a police ban and because of lack of logistic support, meeting sources said.
The acting AL general secretary, Syed Ashraful Islam told reporters after the presidium meeting held at the Gulshan residence of acting party president Zillur Rahman that the authorities have permitted staging of the hunger strike without violating the emergency rules.
He said that the program at the thana level was postponed due to lack of logistics and some other problems.
Ashraful said that the first phase of the agitation programs demanding release and proper treatment of Sheikh Hasina would end through the token hunger strike and the party would think about further course of action later.
