Former BNP Minister MK Anwar Imprisoned after Surrender

Former minister MK Anwar, who was said to be absconding, on Tuesday landed in the Dhaka central jail after he had surrendered in Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge’s court in the GATCO graft case.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party stalwart, Anwar, flanked by his counsels, including the party’s secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, appeared in court and sought bail in the Global Agro Trade Company corruption case.

Moving the bail petition, Delwar argued, ‘The government is trying to taint the image of respectable people by implicating them in false cases one after another.’

He also criticized the judiciary’s role under the present government, saying, ‘It is bad luck for us that the judiciary cannot work independently although it has been separated from the executive of the state.’
